Walking the pooch

I just received the most awesome dog ever. He is an almost eight year old fawn colored pug dog and he is the sweetest thing. I’ve decided I really want to get up and walk him every morning before we start the chaos of the day. He loves it! There is something wonderfully fun about watching his wiggly little way of traveling down the sidewalk. He is definitely not speedy at all, but he’s steady and consistent and I need more of that in my life.

Speaking of steady and consistent: I am going to a Weight Watchers meeting tonight. Knowing this, I started the morning filled with fear. I’ve been down this road before. The summer of 2002 I lost 30 pounds on the program. I then fell away from my newly formed habits and gained that weight back. I’ve tried more than once to rejoin without success. I’ve also tried other things along the way that did not work for me.

So I decided to go back to the one thing I’ve had good results from. I had to think really hard about why it worked once and then failed on subsequent attempts. I came up with a couple of things:

1) My do-overs on WW have been Do It Yourself attempts either on my own or online. I think I am one of those people who really needs the meeting and support group.

2) The secret to my success that summer was that I was also training for a half marathon. I remember most of the time I earned so many points from exercise that I could have never possibly eaten them all. Now, I’m not in a place to train for a half marathon, but there is something I can apply to this attempt. On my failed attempts I spent a ton of time and energy focusing on tweaking what I was eating to fit into the limited points (calories) I was alotted. This meant eating a lot of artificially sweetened, fat free, fake food. I firmly believe that is not healthy and it’s not something I want to get into again. While it is important to make healthier low-calorie food choices, I think the real key will be to exercise enough to earn points and be able to eat at a level I find more comfortable calorie-wise.

That is going to be my approach this time around. I have to get it right this time, too. My doctor told me this summer that I am pre-diabetic. Borderline blood sugar issues that will likely lead to diabetes if I don’t get my act together. I’ve also noticed my blood pressure is at the high end of normal which it never was before. Slowly but surely my bad habits are catching up to me. I managed to quit smoking cold turkey nine years ago. I believe I can do this, too. I have to be around for my son. And to walk the dog. :-)

Easy walk to the store

Just an easy walk to the store to pick up some essentials like ice cream cake and Murphy’s Stout. :-)  It was my first endeavor of any sort post-surgery so I’m excited to get it done.  Yay!

CrossFit WOD

I already wimped out last night, and I was on the fence about working out tonight. I made a deal with myself to at least go down in the basement and spend some time on the Wii Fit figuring something was better than nothing. I did 10:00 minutes of aerobic games (Super Hula Hoop and Basic Step) and then actually felt inspired to do a quick CrossFit type work out:

The 200:

For time-
50 dumbell swings (10 lbs)
50 squats
50 situps
50 pushups

7:43

I feel good about it. I’ve been pretty lax this week, but I have my reasons. I had a really bad ulcerative colitis flare over the weekend including puke sessions on both Saturday and Sunday. Lots of pain, lots of dehydration–big mess. I’m getting back to normal, but it took me a few days to get some semblance of a regular energy level back. Tonight’s workout feels like a big triumph.

Workout:

  • Type: Walk
  • Date: 06/25/2009
  • Time: 20:06:05
  • Total Time: 00:17:43.00
  • Calories: 92

Twisted Ankle Half Marathon–Summerville, GA

I want to come back later and write more about this when I have more time–but a few highlights and key points:

I was completely untrained and had bronchitis all last week, so my goal was to treat this like a hike and just finish it.

The course was AMAZING! Beautiful and well marked with some real challenges but nothing that was overly impossible.

Trail runners are the nicest people I’ve ever encountered in the sporting world.

I was doing great and very happy with my pace, etc–even thinking at one point I might come in under 4:00–but over the last three miles or so the wheels came off. My left hip tightened up and became very painful. I also had a blister on my little toe on my right foot…so every step hurt. The last mile to mile and a half was a very, very slow walk but I made it. Big thanks to CK for sticking with me and helping me tough out the last 30 minutes. That guy rules! :-)
