Run - 0.8 hours - 12/05/2008
One of my worst runs in awhile. My legs got really shredded up during Tuesday’s session with the trainer. I forgot to list calf raises and toe raises on there, but we did them and that is what made me so very sore. My calves have been sort of swollen almost and sore to the touch ever since. This is even after lots of stretching and two leg massages from CK! So, yes, the calves were not happy to run last night and were even less happy about it tonight. After the first mile, I had to stop the treadmill and get off to stretch them. But, I powered it back up and went for the rest.
Tomorrow–I rest!

Movin’ On Up
If I stick to my plan, and don’t run one extra step beyond it, I will have twenty more miles this month than last month. Wow. I feel like I’ve made so much progress considering last spring I was struggling to run more than a mile at a time without walking, huffing/puffing, and turning a scary shade of red.
I have my longest run in a long time coming up this weekend–6 miles. It’s so strange the things your mind will do in attempting to get you through the run. I know I can do five miles–it’s happened several times over the last month or so–the brain then says “One more mile is just another 11 minutes.” And so the brain psychs me up for it and somehow I get through it. When I see all of the 10 and 11 mile runs stacked up late in my training plan, I ponder how on earth I will do it. I just have to believe it will happen….I can’t do it today, but I am training my way there. Every mile I cover today is moving me closer to being able to run 10 in March–and ultimately 13.1 in May.
I have plenty of Saturday and Sunday mornings where it’s hard to remember this. Where it feels so much easier to stay under the covers and sleep than to brave the cold or the mental game of the treadmill. Fortunately, I have a wonderful running partner who drags me out and gets me going. As much as I whine and protest, I am always grateful when the run is done. There is something sublime about sharing running with the partner in your life. We’ve been able to support and push each other and share time and experiences that most people don’t. In those miles where we’re covering the distance and it’s just the rhythm of our footfalls and breathing, I learn so much. I’ve seen him overcome pain and fatigue to acheive his goals. I’ve seen him victorious and disappointed. I’ve seen him run.

Trainer session plus more
Now I’m down to every four weeks with the trainer and it is serving as exactly what I thought it would–a big fat reality check. I’ve been doing great with my running, but strength work has fallen by the way side and I’ve already lost a lot of the gains I saw in the first couple of months. Tonight’s workout kicked my butt! Here’s what I can recall:
planks (2×20 sec)
box jumps
ab stuff
jumping jacks
incline push-ups
one legged squats
more ab stuff
wall sits (1@30 & 1@45)
lat pull-downs 2×12@50
back extensions 2×12
leg presses 2×12@160
I think that’s all. Talking this over with CK on the way home, we decided we will work on some basic strength and core stuff at night after putting the kiddo to bed. We have an ab ball and some hand weights, so we should be able to do some good. Now, we just have to do it!
